Clinical Information

  • A renal mass is an abnormal growth in the renal cortex or the kidney that can be cancerous (malignant) or not cancerous (benign).
  • There are multiple types of renal tumors, but the main ones are renal cell carcinomas, benign renal tumors, and Wilms tumors. What differentiates them from one another are location, size, and the age of the patient.
  • Patients don’t usually exhibit symptoms until the mid to late stages, so these tumors are usually found by chance during the early stages. However, if a patient has any symptoms, they would be the following: blood in urine, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, anemia, low back pain on one side, and fever not caused by an infection for an extended period.
  • People at risk of developing tumors in the kidney are those who smoke, are obese, drink a lot of alcohol, have a family history of high blood pressure/kidney cancer, are constantly exposed to chemicals, and are undergoing kidney dialysis.
  • To diagnose a renam mass, a practitioner will ask for a patient’s medical history, conduct a physical exam and have them undergo other tests like CMP, CBC, urinalysis, kidney function tests, and imaging tests.
  • Treatment will vary depending on the size, stage, and profession. Some usual treatments are active surveillance, nephrectomy, and ablation.

Synonyms Include:

  • Nephroblastoma
  • Metastatic renal cell carcinoma
  • Sarcoma of kidney
  • Bilateral neoplasm of kidneys
  • Mesoblastic nephroma
