Clinical Information
- Also called hypernephroma, renal adenocarcinoma, and kidney cancer, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer.
- Researchers and medical experts haven’t identified the cause of RCC. However, they have determined what can increase one’s risk of being diagnosed with RCC, such as smoking, being overweight, taking pain medicine for an extended period, having hypertension, polycystic kidney disease, cystic kidney disease, Von Hippel-Lindau disease, and having a family history of those with RCC.
- Those with RCC during its early stages won’t exhibit symptoms. However, as it progresses, symptoms may include persistent pain on the side, vision problems, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, blood in the urine, and a lump in the abdomen.
- To diagnose RCC, a practitioner will physically examine the patient first. Afterward, if the practitioner suspects that the patient has RCC, they will ask the patient to undergo additional tests like blood tests, CT scans, biopsies, and urine examinations.
- Common treatments for RCC are surgery, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
Synonyms Include:
- Cancer of the kidney
- Clear cell carcinoma of kidney
- Nephroblastoma
- Metastatic renal cell carcinoma
